03 Jul Penny Lane joins the Academy in record-breaking year for new members
Our own Penny Lane, who is directing a short documentary for the Glassbreaker Films initiative, has joined the ranks of members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This year, a record-breaking 774 new members were invited to join. Thirty-nine percent of these invitees are women. And with 30 percent being people of color, the Academy hopes to decrease the likelihood of another #oscarssowhite ceremony.
Lane has created a name for herself with her inventive shorts and feature documentaries. NUTS!, an animated feature about the true story of a doctor who used implanted goat testicles to treat impotent men, won a special jury prize for editing at the Sundance Film Festival in 2016. IndieWire included her in its list of 25 new Academy members who could “shake up the Oscars.”
The full list of new Academy members indicates there are several branches in which more women were invited than men this year– a pleasant surprise.
